The Role: Regional Mechanical Engineering Lead

The Regional Mechanical Engineering Lead will take responsibility for all mechanical engineering activities across a portfolio of projects throughout Europe.

Reporting directly to senior engineering leadership, you will oversee design management, project engineering, procurement coordination, commissioning activities, technical compliance and engineering team development across multiple live projects.

This is a strategic role that combines technical leadership, project support, risk management and people development. You will work closely with Project Directors, Project Managers, Commercial Teams, Commissioning Managers, BIM Teams and Clients to ensure projects are delivered safely, efficiently and to the highest technical standards.

The successful Regional Mechanical Engineering Lead will play a key role in developing engineering capability throughout the business while ensuring consistent implementation of engineering procedures and best practices across all projects.

Must Have Requirements

  • Must have 10 years' experience delivering mechanical engineering packages on major construction projects
  • Proven experience required managing engineering teams on data centre, pharmaceutical, industrial or mission critical projects
  • Strong design management and commissioning experience is essential
  • Experience working for a mechanical contractor or M&E contractor delivering large-scale projects
  • Proven leadership experience mentoring and developing engineers across multiple projects
Preferred Experience

  • Data centre project experience preferred
  • Chartered Engineer status beneficial
  • Experience working across multiple European jurisdictions
  • Strong understanding of LEED, BREEAM and sustainability requirements
  • Experience supporting preconstruction and tender reviews
Nice to Have

  • Additional commissioning qualifications
  • BIM coordination experience
  • Digital construction and project systems knowledge
  • Multi-language capability
  • Experience developing engineering procedures and standards
Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and oversee mechanical engineering delivery across multiple projects throughout Europe
  • Ensure design management procedures are consistently implemented across all projects
  • Drive compliance with engineering, quality and commissioning processes
  • Review and monitor engineering performance against programme milestones
  • Chair engineering kick-off meetings and technical review sessions
  • Support engineering teams in resolving complex technical issues
  • Manage engineering resources and workload planning across the region
  • Ensure technical submittals are produced, reviewed and approved to the required standards
  • Oversee equipment reviews, technical evaluations and procurement support activities
  • Manage engineering interfaces with BIM teams and design consultants
  • Ensure coordinated design solutions are fully compliant with project specifications
  • Review and monitor procurement schedules and long-lead equipment tracking
  • Ensure project engineering procedures are implemented consistently
  • Support commercial teams regarding technical variations and design changes
  • Identify value engineering opportunities across projects
  • Review commissioning strategies and ensure commissionability assessments are completed
  • Ensure testing procedures, SATs and commissioning activities are coordinated and delivered
  • Support successful project handover and client training programmes
  • Monitor engineering risks and implement mitigation strategies
  • Maintain regional engineering risk registers and escalation procedures
  • Produce monthly engineering reviews and performance reports
  • Lead engineering lessons learned initiatives and continuous improvement programmes
  • Ensure compliance with local regulations, standards and authority requirement
  • Support recruitment, onboarding and development of engineering personnel
  • Assist with succession planning and leadership development programmes
  • Promote engineering excellence and best practice throughout the organisation
  • Lead risk identification, assessment and mitigation activities across all engineering functions
  • Monitor technical, procurement, programme and commissioning risks
  • Develop mitigation plans and ensure implementation by project teams
  • Escalate significant risks to senior management where required
  • Promote a proactive risk management culture throughout engineering teams
  • Ensure transparent reporting of engineering risks and corrective actions
  • Develop and maintain engineering competency frameworks
  • Mentor Senior Engineers, Project Engineers and Graduate Engineers
  • Identify training requirements and coordinate development programmes
  • Support engineers pursuing professional accreditation and chartership
  • Conduct performance reviews and career development planning
  • Assist with leadership development initiatives for future engineering managers
  • Support salary reviews and succession planning activities
About You

You are an experienced Mechanical Engineering Manager, Engineering Lead or Senior Mechanical Engineer with a proven track record delivering large-scale projects within the data centre, pharmaceutical, industrial or mission critical sectors.

You have strong technical expertise across mechanical systems, design management, procurement, commissioning and project delivery. You are comfortable managing multiple engineering teams simultaneously while maintaining high standards of quality, safety and programme performance.

You possess strong leadership and communication skills and can effectively engage with clients, consultants, project managers, commercial teams and site personnel across a range of project environments.

Most importantly, you understand how successful engineering delivery directly impacts project performance and are passionate about developing engineering talent while driving continuous improvement.
