Primary Design Electrical Engineer

You are an experienced Primary Design Electrical Engineer looking to join a leading multidisciplinary engineering contractor operating across Ireland, the UK and Europe. Primary Design Electrical Engineer Skills

• Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
  
  
• Minimum 3 years’ experience in primary electrical design or design-focused project engineering.
  
  
• Strong understanding of HV and MV network requirements, system resilience, and electrical studies.
  
  
• Experience producing primary plant layouts, substation designs and HV/MV technical documentation.
  
  
• Knowledge of relevant standards such as IEC, IEEE, EN and compliance with safety, fire and evacuation regulations.
  
  
• Experience integrating energy management systems and automated control systems with electrical networks.
  
  
• Proven track record delivering engineering projects on time, on budget and to required quality standards.
  
  
• Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
  
  
• Excellent communication, stakeholder engagement and presentation skills.
  
  
• Strong IT skills and experience with CAD and electrical engineering software.
  
  
• A delivery-focused mindset with strong attention to detail and an ability to mentor junior engineers.
  
  
• Strong organisational, planning and problem-solving skills with an emphasis on EHS and quality processes.
  
  

As a Primary Design Electrical Engineer, you will:

• Produce detailed Primary Plant designs for HV substation projects, from concept through to construction and energisation.
  
  
• Develop engineering reports including CT burden assessments, lighting and heating calculations, and other HV system documentation.
  
  
• Generate substation compound layouts, building arrangements and design deliverables in line with TSO/DSO specifications and client requirements.
  
  
• Work closely with secondary design, civil, commissioning, operations and project teams to ensure smooth technical coordination.
  
  
• Produce and review all primary plant drawings, specifications and technical documentation.
  
  
• Ensure all designs comply with industry standards, project requirements, safety regulations and electrical codes.
  
  
• Provide technical support throughout installation, testing, commissioning and energisation phases.
  
  
• Identify and mitigate design risks, resolving technical issues proactively.
  
  
• Support project delivery from initial enquiry and tendering through detailed design and construction.
  
  
• Engage with clients, consultants and contractors to ensure effective communication and technical clarity.
  
  
• Participate in design reviews, risk assessments, and quality assurance processes.
  
  
• Contribute to the development of engineering standards and continuous improvement across the electrical design function.
  
  
• Mentor graduates and junior engineers, supporting their technical development within the engineering team.
  
  

The Package Salary will be DOE, but you can expect €65,000 plus package depending on experience.
